Piazza del Popolo

John Martin was born in 1957 and studied at Hornsey and Exeter College of Art followed by a Post Graduate Diploma at the Royal College of Art.

John’s work follows the line of traditional figurative painting which reflect a sense of place and atmosphere. He is known for his skill in painting light and shadow.

Brian Sewell the well known Art Critic said “The gentle honesty of his observation and a technique that matches it produce pictures without irritating mannerisms or striving effects.”

A member of the Royal Society of British Artists since 1990 and a Senior Member since 2016 John is the recipient of many awards including the David Murray Landscape Scholarship, WH Patterson Prize, the Fabrica Painting Prize, the Windsor and Newton Best Artist Award and the de Lazlo Medal.

John has exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad and his work is in many private and public collections.
